Treatment - Continuous Positive Airway Pressure
What is Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)?

CPAP is the most widely recommended treatment for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea. CPAP entails wearing a mask-like device while you sleep, which provides pressurized air to prevent the airway from collapsing. Most CPAP units are the size of a tissue box and many now come with a built in humidifier for comfort.

How does CPAP work?

Sleep apnea causes interruption of natural breathing during sleep. The CPAP uses compressed air to keep the air passage open so breathing continues normally. CPAP therapy is the most accepted and successful means of treating sleep apnea. CPAP machines deliver a gentle flow of positive air pressure through a mask worn over the nose during sleep. This pressure acts as an “air splint”, keeping the airway open to allow normal breathing. The air pressure required varies from person to person.

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) refers to a medical device used primarily for the treatment of sleep apnea. CPAP is the treatment of choice for most people with obstructive sleep apnea. It is the most reliable and effective treatment in most cases. Hundreds of thousands of CPAP devices are now in use treating obstructive sleep apnea.

Do I have to use CPAP every night?

It's important to your health to use the CPAP at least 80% of the time. Once you get used to using CPAP, you'll find you want to use it all the time. CPAP treatment can bring relief to the symptoms of sleep apnea and give you back your life. However, like any treatment prescribed for you, how you follow through can make a big difference. Adjusting to CPAP only takes a couple of weeks.
