How do we diagnose you?
How is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) Diagnosed?

  • Discuss sleep complaints and symptoms with your doctor.
  • If a sleep disorder is suspected, ask your doctor to refer you to a sleep specialist for evaluation
  • An overnight diagnostic sleep study is performed to determine the type and severity of the sleep disorder

Atlantic Sleep Apnea Services no longer provides the testing for Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Our company’s focus is to provide patients with the highest quality therapeutic therapy after they have been diagnosed with OSA. We are pleased and excited to forward patient’s sleep study requests to Atlantic Sleep Institute.

ASI is a Sleep Medicine Clinic operated by Sleep Medicine Physicians that not only can look at Obstructive Sleep Apnea, but all Sleep Disorders.

Medical Examination - Do I need a referral?

You can visit Atlantic Sleep Apnea without a referral from your doctor. However, doctors are often a first-line of defense. They will work to diagnose sleep apnea based on your symptoms, medical and family histories and a physical exam. At that point, he or she will give you a referral for a sleep study.

ASI does require a referral from your Family Doctor or Specialist. Download a referral form

What is a Sleep Study?

A Sleep Study is used to determine if you indeed suffer from a sleep disorder. There are two types, either an “in-home study” or “in-lab study”. With a referral from your doctor, Atlantic Sleep Institute will determine what sleep study is best suited for your diagnosis. Learn more about what a Sleep Study is.

Keep a sleep diary

To help your doctor (and Atlantic Sleep Apnea), consider keeping a sleep diary for 1 to 2 weeks. Write down how much you sleep each night, as well as how sleepy you feel at various times during the day. Your doctor also will want to know how loudly and often you snore or make gasping or choking sounds during sleep. Often you're not aware of such symptoms and must ask a family member or bed partner to report them. Let your doctor know if anyone in your family has been diagnosed with sleep apnea or has had symptoms of the disorder.

Did you know that during an average night’s sleep, an obstructive sleep apnea sufferer may experience 60 apneas an hour, or 400 per night. Data has shown that the risk of long-term mortality increases when patients experience 20 or more apneas per hour.

How do we provide treatment?

The results of your SLEEP STUDY are used to evaluate if you have SLEEP APNEA and the severity. Atlantic Sleep Apnea Services uses those results to develop a personalized treatment plan for you. Don’t let this potentially life-threatening disorder go untreated. Contact your Doctor today! Ask for a referral to ATLANTIC SLEEP INSTITUTE. Download a copy of ASI’s referral form.
